Should I Wash My Human Hair Wig Before Wearing It?
You just purchased a ready-to-wear wig, now what? Whether you wash it before wearing it is a personal choice. But keep in mind, it also depends on where you purchased it from. Also, each time you wash your wig, it shortens its lifespan. Given these points, some women feel more comfortable putting on a wig they've washed themselves. Another option is to just rinse it versus a full shampoo and condition.
How Often Should I Wash My Wig?
Deciding how often you should wash your hair piece is another personal choice. However, some women clean their lace front wigs once every one to two weeks. If the hair begins to feel dry or sticky, then it's probably time to give it a rinse.
The same holds true if it begins to lose its volume or curl. Given that washing your wig reduces its lifespan, you don't want to over wash it. Here's a trick to prolong its longevity. Wear a wig cap underneath and remove your wig before going to bed. This will also reduce the number of times you need to shampoo and condition it.
How To Wash Your Human Hair Wig?
Now that you know more about how often to wash it, let's move on to how to wash your human hair wig. You'll discover that your wig washing routine can be done in just a few easy steps.
#1: Pre-wash care
Start prepping your wig. Using a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to gently comb through any tangles is recommended. Always start from the hairs' end and work your way up toward the roots.
#2: Rinse
The next step is to get the wig wet. So, place it under the faucet and use lukewarm to cool wanter to fully submerge it. If your wig is long-haired, place it under a shower instead of using the sink. This will prevent the hair from going into the drain. After rinsing, carefully remove the excess water with your hands. But be gentle, don't wring or twist it out.
#3: Shampoo
Place a quarter sized amount of shampoo into your hands and stroke the hair from roots to ends. But be sure to keep the shampoo away from the scalp of the wig. And don't be heavy-handed while shampooing. Doing so could damage the strands. So, no scrubbing or rubbing the wig hair.
For optimal results, use a clarifying shampoo that's specially made for human hair wigs. These shampoos are gentle as well as designed specifically for the wig's needs. And for color-treated hair, consider using a mild shampoo.
To remove the shampoo, run cool water from the base down to the bottom of the hair. Continue this process until the water runs clear. Next, use a towel to gently blot the hair dry before applying conditioner.
#4: Condition
Now it's time to condition. Just like using appropriate shampoo, you'll want to use a wig-approved hydrating conditioner. Starting at the bottom, work a small dab into the wig. Gently comb through the strands with your fingers. And keep the conditioner away from the base of the wig. Letting the conditioner set for one to five minutes is a good idea. However, follow the directions for use on the bottle. Once the time is up, run cold water from the top of the wig to the ends of the strands. Remember to get rid of all the conditioner before blotting it dry.
#5: Dry
You've washed and conditioned your wig, so now you just have to wait for it to dry. Use a soft towel to lightly blot it and then leave it on a wig stand to air dry. Using a blow dryer to dry the wig is not recommended because it dries out the hair. Avoid brushing the hair until it's completely dry. When it's no longer wet, proceed styling it as you normally would.
